The Haircut...

THE HAIRCUT

As many of you know, our youngest son, Porter, has had longer hair than normal for a traditional 2 ½-3 year old. When given the explanation that he was donating his hair, most people understood…but anxiously awaited seeing him in short hair.
We also gave the explanation that Porter was entering a contest called “Miss Relay” in which male contestants dress like women and collect dollars as votes – benefiting Relay for Life. (Porter dressed as a hula dancer – the theme being “Marga-RELAY-ville”) In the two divisions, Porter won the child’s division and first prize overall, raising $809.00! Great job!
Porter and I grew our hair out (Porter for one year, and me for about 1 ½ years.) to donate. The original plan was to sell it and send all proceeds to the American Cancer Society, whom I support mainly because of my mom’s illness and the great group of people I’ve met through Relay for Life.
Once we cut our hair (the day before my mom’s birthday – July 27) I listed it online with photos on several sites, and had no success. I found wigfund.org after that, and found that you can donate hair or funds to help someone reach their goal for a custom wig. You can read their stories and find out about why they want a wig that’s custom made. It is very compelling. I chose an 8 year old girl who had lost her hair to Alopecia, and wrote a note sending our support and a little about my mom. Here are the photos from our journey!

  1. Oh -- and by the way - I had 2 ponytails of 11 1/2" each, and Porter had 5 ponytails of 7" each! Yay!!!
